"The irony — which is hardly lost on the songwriter, who is a cagier character than she appears — is that Loveland is endearing and identifiable because there’s nothing slick about her. Her melodies don’t always resolve comfortably over her band’s scruffy backing tracks, her lyrics betray an indifference to meter, and even when she sings with authority, she taps into the conviction of a wronged child rather than the determination of the adult at the steering wheel. All these things reinforce the realism of this project"
